I have just re-installed XP Home. I went to the Windows
Update site to get the assorted patches but got the
following warning:

"New Windows update software required... To update your
version of the software and begin using Windows Update
click Update Now."

So I click "Update Now". A message flashes briefly on the
screen, so fast that I cannot read it, then I'm left
looking at "New Windows update software required..."

I have installed IE 6 SP1, still the same problem. So if I
need to update before I can update how do I ever get
started?

Manually install the latest Windows Update controls:

For Windows XP:

Download the controls from: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab
and save them to your desktop.

Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Open".
3. Select all the files listed.
4. Right click on them and click "Extract."
5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."

Thank you sooooo much for that. You'd think MS might have added a
footnote about what to do if the automatic update doesn't. But then
again...
