Hi
I've seen this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824159/en-us

I.E when you try and update an Access DB table from an external linked
file - you get this error.

"Updating data in a linked table is not supported by this ISAM"

However on one machine it works the other returns this errors. The DB
is saved in Access 97 format both machines have XP and Access 2003.

But on the machine that the update works we get a security warning
saying unsafe expressions.
Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 - must be installed

So I thought working machine has no update on it. Checked it has XP
SvcPack 2. On this machine I can even change values in Acess and they
are changed in the excel sheet.

Both these updates according to MS documentation should fail.

I'm really confused..

hi,

Sounds like you are doing a lot of running around trying to install service
packs, and then service packs for those service packs.

My experience has proven that you can update linked files. I usually link
to an external file, then make a table in Access from that external file.
All updates and edits can be done in the Access table. Then maybe you can
create a new external file from the amended Access table.

Hope this helps.

True geebee.

Just worrying when you don't understand whats going on. Works on one
and not the other.

MS article I quoted says - it MAY happen as in we cannot tell steps to
reproduce

Just hope it doesn't affect odbc linked tables. I've upsized Acess to
SQL Server but have left one user an Access DB that doesn't contain
data but links to SQL Server. So they can continue to do adhoc
queries/updates via Access GUI.

Seen lost of posts on same problem no solution - but more importantly
no explanation..
