Updating page numbers on Table of contents

When I right-click to update page numbers, the option "update page numbers
only" is missing, and I lose my extra formatting. (Word 2002 XP) Anyone
know why? Thank you!

WHAT extra formatting? And what is the menu command named that you select
from the right-click menu?
