Is there a way to automatically interrogate the system, find out what devices
have superseded drivers and seek them out on the web? Has anyone produced a
"driver-refresher" program?

Drivers need only be updated if there is a problem with the current
install or there is a new feature the user must have. Updating drivers
just for the sake of having the newest isn't the best approach.

That said, there might be a solution out there but I don't know. Don't
use windows update for drivers unless it's MS hardware.

Thanks Rock - I think I do need to update drivers because Device Manager
tells me so. However, I'm not sure of the specs of the devices
(manufacturer, model, whatever it is i need). The devices are in a PC I
bought on which I clean installed WinXP, losing the driver info when i did so.

I'm assuming that "Device Manager tells me so" means that you have
hardware installed that needs drivers. Download, install and run a free
system inventory program like Belarc Advisor. The older Aida32 is good
for this, too and doesn't need to be installed.

Then get the drivers from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

Open the case and see what motherboard it is using. This should then lead
you to the drivers you need. If it is video drivers, then take a look at
the video card installed.

When Microsoft stops treating its customers as thieves, I might consider
running Windoze again. Of course, I wouldn't allow it to access the
Internet. Windoze has no place on the Internet.

:

Download Belarc Advisor from here:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

That will give you info on the devices installed.
