Updating Bios via Gateway.com

I have been having a few problems with my PC lately. I decided to try and
update the BIOS, so I went to Gateway.com to get the update for my pc. I
followed their directions--downloaded appropriate update, and then copied to
IBM formatted floppy. It stated to restart computer with floppy in drive so I
did. Upon restart I just get a screen that states : Invalid system
disk--Replace disk, and then press any key.
I emailed Gateway and was told to :
1. Insert Floppy disk on the floppy drive

2. Open My Computer then right click on the A: drive the click Format

3. At the format tab, kindly check the create an MS-DOS startup disk
then click Format.

4. After the format is complete, copy the necessary files needed to
update the BIOS.

I did as instructed, but when it came time to copy files to floppy I
received popups that files were already on disk and asked if I wanted to
overwrite them.
I then emailed the Gateway tech again(numerous times) and he doesn't seem to
give me a straight answer on what to do. I think he thinks they are the same
files, but they are not, they just have the same name. I tried to explain
this to the tech. several times but he just doesn't understand me or
something.

The floppy was completely blank prior to formatting, so these files I am
being asked to overwrite were put on by formatting process. If I overwrite
them, will this screw up the formatting I just did? If I do not overwrite
them, will the new files be left off and screw up my bios update?

If I mess up this update, will my computer still operate? I do not want to
go ahead and try anything until I know what I can possibly be messing up
here.

I really do not know much about any of this obviously, so any help will be
appreciated.

This is the best way that I can explain this problem. I am not an expert, so
do not write back with any arrogant remarks please. I already know I am not
too computer literate. A lot of answers I get on here while are helpful,
sound like they are coming straight from Comic Book Guy off of the Simpson's
if you know what I mean. Peace

There has been a couple of discussions on this board about bios in the past
few hours. I suggest that you read a bit, find them and see what has been
said.

Why do you think you need to upgrade your BIOS?

Certainly don't do it just because it's X years old and there are upgrades
available. Although a BIOS upgrade normally goes well, it is not without
danger. If something goes wrong while the upgrade is an progress (for
example, a lapse in power) you can be left with no BIOS at all, and an
unbootable computer.

Do a BIOS upgrade if you need to--because you are having a problem that the
new version is known to fix--not just because one is available.
