Updating a table of contents

Hi all,

At one time I have created a table of contents. The table looks fine, but I
have now decided to change the style of my heading 4 (from italic to normal).
When I follow the manual in how to update my table of contents (open master
document, normal view, click somewhere in table of contents and then press
F9), I do get the pop-up window asking me whether to update the page numbers
only, or update the whole table. When I click on update the whole table, I
see that Word is working on something, but when it is done, the heading 4
link is still in italic in my table of contents (where as the heading 4 text
in my paper is still in normal text).
Have I forgotten to do something? Did I do something wrong?

Does anyone have an idea?

Did you remove italics from the TOC4 style (that's not the same
as the Heading 4 style) in Format | Styles and Formatting?

Ha, is that it! I can't remember how I made that table in the first place. I
indeed have not changed the TOC4 style. Odd thing now is that when I call up
style and formatting (I have Word 2003), I don't see that style anywhere.
When I click on the line in the table of contents, it says it is a
"hyperlink". Where can I find the style toc4 so that I can change it?

Click on Format | Styles and Formatting | Show: Custom | check
the "TOC 4" box under "Styles to be visible" | OK.
 
Forget my previous query. I have found out how to get the toc4 style to show
up (simply by calling "show all styles").
However, something else has happened after I have updated the table of
contents.
My table of contents usually looks like this for each line

2.3. New Zealand ........................................... 134

Which is chapter nr, chapter name, and page number.

Of all the lines, there are now 2 lines that look like this

2.1. Results100

So the page number is directly "glued" to the chapter title.

I have checked the toc3. I have 28toc3's and they all look ok in the table
of contents, except for those two. When I click on those lines and want to
find out about the code however, I get something like "PAGEREF Toc107817330
\h" instead of "HYPERLINK toc and number" as I get for my other toc3 lines
(although sometimes it does say "HYPERLINK etc" when I toggle the code.

What has happened? How can I get those 2 lines to look like the other
26toc3's I have?

If you click in the middle of one of the weird TOC3 lines, and
look at the horizontal ruler, do you see an extra tab stop in the
middle of the line right about where the page number is? If you
do, modify the TOC3 style to get rid of the extra tab stop.

It's more likely that the style/entries have lost the right tab at the right
margin.

Don't think so, because the OP says all but two his TOC 3 lines
are okay, and the OP gave a one-word Heading 3 as an example of a
TOC 3 that appeared incorrectly, so that made me think it was an
extra tab stop in the middle rather than a missing tab stop at
the right.
 
Yes, and apparently your assessment was better than mine. I've seen similar
results when the tab stop was lost, though, usually because Word decided
that, because I had one TOC level centered (without page numbers), I didn't
want a tab stop in the other styles. <sigh>
