For reasons I won't get into here, yesterday (Jan 21, 04) I purchased XP and installed it. Upgrading from Windows ME on a machine that has a Celeron processor at 633 Mghz with only 64 Meg of RAM and about 10 gig of hard drive space. The brand new software I purchased from Office Max needs at least 17 criticle updates accoring to the Microsoft Automatic Update Site. I can't get the updates to download and install in less that 40 or 50 days because I am on dial-up line that is used for Credit Card authorization terminal. I have downloaded (2.5 hours on a cable modem) the network admin file (xpsp1a_en_x86.exe) but I am not sure it will work with a stand alone machine (novice)

I want to download the entire file from my machine at home (not XP) because it's on a cable modem and then copy the update file or files to a CD and take that back to the store for fixing the brand new XP software that must have been on the shelf for a year or so

Any intel will be greatly appreciated.

First, 64Mb is not enough RAM for XP - you need at least 256Mb.

Second, downloading at home and bringing to work on a CD will be fine.

Norm;
Downloading and burning to CD is a very good and recommended way to go
for those in situations such as yours.
Also download Windows XP Rollup 1, after that there are only a few
updates as all the rest are incorporated in SP1 and the Rollup 1:
