I recently recieved a note from microsoft via e-mail that recommended that I
install a patch called "sept 2004 Cumulative patch". I subscribe to the
automatic updating service on my Dell computer running XP and am npot sure
whether or not that patch got installed. Is there someway I can tell?
Isn't it unusual to recieve such notices from microsoft?

It is extremely rare to never that you would receive an
email from MicroSoft regarding a patch update (lean
heavily on the never). It probably had a link for you to
click on also. What ever you do, do not click on the link.
Go to the Windows Update site and manually check for
updates if you are not sure if this is installed. The
email you received is most certainly not from MicroSoft.
Good Luck
