i have installed various programs on my computer, and it seems like every one
of them wants to look for updates (not just security programs, i.e. Kodak for
digital pictures). is there a way using XP i can get them to stop asking for
updates? i have turned off the windows update but it doesn't seem to work for
anything else....

Look in the program's options for a setting to turn this off. Look in task
manager at the running processes. Research the ones that are there to see
what each one does. If it's associated with the update of a program, and
you can't turn it off in the options for that program, disable it from
running in msconfig.

Here are a list of research sites to find out what the processes shown in
task manager are.

First step to eliminate a program from running at startup should be to check
in the options for the program you don't want to start and see if there is a
setting to tell it not to run at startup. The next step is to remove any
entries you don't want from the two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys in
the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.

Additionally, windows update only deals with updates from the WU or MU
sites. It has nothing to do with the updates for 3rd party programs. Don't
turn that off.

regretably, many such programs cannot have the auto update turned off
through the software. It can be turned off through the registry.
