I want to do a fresh install of XP, but it takes forever to download
and install all of the service pack and updates.

Is there a way to download them and burn them to disk before I do the
reinstall? This way when I am ready to reinstall, I can just access
the updates from the disk?

Those updates that you've already installed should be in a subfolder of
your Windows directory. I can't recall the precise name (I'm not on an
XP system at the moment), but it starts with a $... Probably the first
folder in the Windows directory.

If you can't see this folder, you probably need to change your view
settings:

Explorer > Options > Views > Advanced Settings

check "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files"

Hi,

The $ntuninstall... folders only contains files to uninstall updates,
they can not be used to reinstall an update.

Yes, there is a folder containing all the UNINSTALL stuff, but that's
not what I was referring to. There is another folder with the INSTALL
items. The name starts with a $h, I think. I certainly have it on my
machine. In fact, I made a copy of it so that I can use it in the
future if necessary.

The following is a quote from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824994

....Software updates that address widespread critical issues, such as
security vulnerabilities, and that are broadly released by Microsoft
are also known as general distribution releases (GDRs). These software
updates include the following:

· security updates
· critical updates
· updates
· update rollups
· drivers
· feature packs

[snip]

When a security update, critical update, update, update rollup, driver,
or feature pack installs GDR version files, the hotfix files are also
copied to the %windir%\$hf_mig$ folder. This supports migration to the
appropriate files if you later install a hotfix or service pack that
includes earlier versions of these files.

I often have some difficulty in fully understanding MS-speak, so I
don't know if the $hf_mig$ folder contains ALL updates that have been
automatically installed.
