I have tried to install updates on my home computer,
running windows XP. The computer arrived with windows
already installed. Took 3 hours to download the updates,
then the updates caused a problem with Windows which then
needed reloading. I do not have the discs, and so was
unable to do this. So I continued with logging in, and
once again i have the blaster worm. It took me days to
remove it last time. Any thoughts on my best next move?

Why did installing these updates cause this problem.

Very annoyed

which updates
if you mean genuine updates from the windows update site
they dont contain worms
if you have ran a update you received by email then
you have been a little naive and infected yourself

the blaster worm is very easy to remove and should take 2 min
not days

hit ctrl alt del
under processes find msblast and end it
goto c/windows/system32 and del msblast.exe
use either msconfig or the registry to remove
the msblast.exe startup entry
goto administrative tools/services
select rpc service and then the recovery tab
make sure all boxes say restart service and not restart computer

thats it

The updates did not cause the problem YOUR lack of
computer security did!!
<snip>

hush ... not all people are up on exactly what security is
and yes some people are niave they are still people and have potential to be
educated... so instead of flaming .. teach
