win xp pro sp1

after several attempts and subsequent restores, I am finding that windows
updates will not finish the install after downloading selected updates

I let one attempt run overnight, still did not finish

any suggestions or has anyone else found this to occur ?

that is not running

the install portion is pig slow, and then never completes.

I found this bug/patch report, below, but following the instructions did
not resolve the problem
(unfortunately I could not install sp1 again, as explained, because my
system says it is still there.)

Appears this bug between restore and updates is yet unresolved ???

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after
each line:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Type exit to close the command prompt, and then install Windows XP SP1
again.

You download the updates (save them into a folder on your desktop called
"updates" or something memorable so you can find them). Then one by one
double-click on each update - they are executables. Reboot when
necessary.

Activate "Windows Update catalog" by clicking customise in the left hand
pane. Use Windows Update to tell you what updates you need, and then in
Windows Update catalog, download the updates to your HDD. (I put them in
a special folder called "Windows Updates" and in a sub-folder by date).
Then go off-line, disable your Anti Virus program, and double click on
each file you have downloaded to install. This method also means that
you can burn them to a CD to keep if (when!) you re-format and
re-install Windows!

thanks..

I believe the root of this problem was update 821557

after attempting to install that update things went bad.

a day and much grief later, I have been able to get back to a working state
and will now do updates as you explained

thanks again

Sounds like corrupt catalog files, rename the Catroot2 folder in
C:\Windows\System32, reboot and try again.
