KB 886165 is correct. I get error Ox8007f007
I do not understand what I am to do based on the link that you
provided to microsoft support.

Well - you should have your doubts you are supposed to be getting that
update.

APPLIES TO
.. Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

And you stated you have a Windows XP (whatever edition) w/SP2 computer.
This is why I gave you the link. That is the KB Article you gave.
To make sure you are experiencing the symptoms the KB states.

This one would make more sense:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886185

But you *could be*, I suppose - doing something with SMS?

Your link now refers to KB 886185 , but my problem is with KB 886165. Maybe I
should just disable the firewall, or is there another solution?

Okay - I have to ask - do you read what is said and sent or just skim it?

The first link I sent pointed to the KB you claimed to be having trouble
with on your Windows XP with SP2 system.
As the associated article references "Microsoft Systems Management Server
2003" only and no associated download - I asked you to confirm that is the
patch you were having trouble with.

You came back saying that was the correct thing. You asked what you should
do with the original link I sent. The link was to demonstrate that *maybe*
this patch wasn't even meant for you. Are you running "Microsoft Systems
Management Server 2003"?

So I re-iterated what the article said and asked again if you were sure by
pointing out that a more appropriate (and easily mistaken for the other
number) article that may better apply to your situation was 886185. I
linked you to that description just so you could see what it was.

Now you did mention one bit of useful information in all that...

"... I get error 0x8007F007 ..."

According to "Torgeir Bakken":
---------
Error 0x8007F007 is
STATUS_CAN'T_FIND_INF
Setup could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system.

This could be an indication that the cryptographic service isn't
working as it should.

See if this helps:

Grab : http://www.michna.com/kb/tools/fixdb.batRun it.You can open and read
what it does if you like.It stops a service, re-registers associated DLLS,
restarts the service.---------

See if running the fix does anything for you. It could be your
cryptographic service is just FUBAR and grabbing the wrong thing -
although - that would be a new one to me.

In as far as I can tell with the information provided - not only do you not
need KB886165, but it does not have an associated patch/download nor is it
for what operating system/application set you have mentioned having.

The above link got mangled... Don't know how.

http://www.michna.com/kb/tools/fixdb.bat

That is the link to the batch script I think you should run to fix your
Cryptographic service...

Greatly appreciate your patience with me on this subject. My knowledge and
sophistication with windows only approaches that what is needed for this fix.
However,I did read the links fully.
I will use this holiday weekend to try the fixes suggested. With lots of
luck, I will succeed.

I have another, more serious problem. My desktop computer does not recognize
the external hard drive that has all of the back up from when I reinstalled
XP SP2.
I did the obvious checks including insuring that the external drive works on
my laptop and that other devices work on my USB desktop connections. I have
not been successful in my contacts with windows or dantz.

My external hard drive is Western Digital Model: WD80OBO15-RNN.
Your help would be appreciated.

Do you have the latest motherboard chipset drivers installed?
- What model/make is the computer?
- If self-built or locally built - what is the make/model of the
motherboard?

The drive works on other systems that connect to the same network?
Can the machine in question communicate over the network with the other
machines?
(Work-around line of questions..)

When you did your tests, did you try different USB cables in different
ports?
Particularly - did you use a known working USB cable in a rear USB port?
