Update windows XP to a geniune copy

We seem to be a victim of software counterfeiting. If we purchase an update,
do I have to reinstall all my programs and data.

You can do a repair install. Except I dont think a Pirated copy
qualifies for an "update". THough you can check with Microsoft
Licencing for a definitave answer.

As long as you own a previous copy of Windows, you can do an update.

Are you sure, or are you just relying on the flawed WGA notification?
Many reports of false positives, so before you spend good money
needlessly you should make sure.
