I am using Office XP Professional and running Windows XP Professional. I
currently have Messenger 4.7 installed. I was going to update to MSN
Messenger 6.1 but after reading about the problems everyone has been having,
I am wondering if I should leave 4.7 installed or update to 5.0? Is version
5.0 any better? If I would installed MSN Messenger, would I have trouble
using Outlook if I do not use MSN as ISP. I am currently using a dial up
connection with local ISP.

Greetings Lori,

Windows Messenger 5 is not a required upgrade by any means and looks exactly the same. With
the exception of UPnP file transfer and digital ink support to and from TabletPCs, there
really isn't much new for normal users of the .NET Messenger service in Windows Messenger 5.

If you install MSN Messenger, the only real problem some people experience is when it
continues to login along with MSN Messenger (and this can be fixed if it's a problem),
Outlook should be no problem.

Thanks for the info Jonathan!

I was going to turn off the "load at startup" and "run in background"
options for Windows Messenger after I install MSN 6.1. Is this the correct
way to keep from having trouble with Windows Messenger--or do I need to do
something else too?
