Update Task List

How do you add people to the Updates List? This field is always greyed out on my tasks. Help just says to check the Send Status Reports box, and that only the owner of the task can send updates. I want a variety of people to receive updates of tasks.
 
Are these tasks that someone assigned to you? The Updates list is relevant
only for tasks that have been assigned.
