Update Problem

Each time I boot the computer Windows OneCare indicates an update is
required. The update is "Definition Update for Beta Windows Defender
1.14.1402.2 KB915597." I then go to Windows installation update and click
install. I receive the message my computer has been successfully updated,
however when I reboot I get the same sequence for the same file. According to
the update history I have successfully installed the same file six time so
far.

This began when I had trouble with .NET Framework 1.1 and followed KB824643
to trouble shoot it.

Try this workaround:

1. Remove the current signature file. To do this, click Start, click Run, type
Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
and then click OK.
2. Open Windows Defender. To do this, click Start, click Programs,
and then click Windows Defender.
3. Check for new definitions. To do this, click the Help options arrow next
to the Windows Defender Help icon, click About Windows Defender, and
then click Check for Updates.

If you check your update history, you've probably "installed" it fifty
bazillion times.

If Carey's solution doesn't work, the following should--they are the
verbatim instructions (copied and pasted from the email) I received from
technical support:

Step 1:

============

1. Click Start, click Run, type "appwiz.cpl" (without quotation marks)
in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. Select Windows Defender from the program list and click the Remove
button to uninstall.

3. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks) in the
Open box, and then click OK.

Step 2:

============

1. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
following link:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean
Up.

3. Select all Windows Defender related entries from the list (if there
are) and click Remove.

Step 3:

============

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Download and install Windows Defender from the following link and
reboot the computer:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en

3. Please go to Microsoft Update:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and install the updates for
Windows Defender. Check if the issue still occurs.

With both suggestions, when I entered the line"Msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" I got a box "Are You Sure You Want to
Remove This Program." I clicked Yes and received another message block, "The
installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source
exists and then you can access it." I clicked OK and got nothing.

Me too.

I doublechecked the email I sent back to support, and indeed, I got the
same message. I just continued to follow the steps to completion, and
indeed, the update installed at the end. I also got another error
message. I took screen shots of everything to send back, along with the
windowsupdate.log, just to be sure, but it was all good.

I'm sorry. I should have mentioned this in my post, but I thought it
only happened to me because I'm a little weird.

I reinstalled Defender went to check the updates and got the message, "The
installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source
exists and then you can access it."

Well, of course, I'm clueless, because unlike Carey, who knows what he's
doing, I was cutting and pasting.

If you were me and I were you, I'd send a letter to Update Support, and
ask them to fix it, which is exactly what I did. In my experience, it's
free and it's fast, and I don't think you can beat that.
