My laptop recently crashed. I reinstalled Windows back to factory
settings from the rescue disk but the computer is a few years old
(early Win XP)

I am concerned that as soon as I connect to the Internet it will be
vulnerable to viruses & spyware.

If I download a/v s/w such as AVG and a firewall such as kerio on my
other computer & install these will it then be safe to connect my old
computer to the internet even with unpatched windows, or is there any
way of downloading the necessary windows patches to and installing
these before putting it back on the net?

You can do that or you can go to Administrative Updates at MS and
download/burn to cd the updates

A computer should never go on the internet without a firewall and A/V
software so your solution of downloading these programs from another
computer and installing on your system is fine. After that go to the
windows update site and get SP2. Then the post SP2 updates. SP2 comes with
it's own firewall but it is not two way so the Kerio Personal Firewall (now
owned by Sunbelt Software) is a better firewall solution.
