hi,

i downloaded last week an update of windows xp. it crated
in most of my folders (esp. music folders and photos) 2
types of files:
- thumbs.db
- ~desknote.ini (not sure about the name of this one)

i deleted most of them. but i would like to know what
these files are? seems like a privacy breach

thanks, adrien

These two files are 'Normally hidden', to set default state (hidden), goto;
'Tools' menu / 'Folder Options...' / 'View' tab / click 'Restore Defaults' /
click 'Apply' / OK

The normally hidden file, 'thumbs.db' is a file that is created by the OS in
a picture folder to hold thumbnails of the pics in the folder. The file can
be prevented from being created by an option 'Do Not Cache Thumbnails'
within the place described before (to 'Restore Defaults')

The normally hidden file, 'desktop ini' is created by the OS in every
folder, it records data such as how the folder is to be displayed etc,. If
file is deleted the folder will revert to system defaults until you make a
change, when it will be recreated.

Hi,

Thumbs.db is used for when you create thumbnail views of the files.

The .ini files hold information about your settings for that folder.

Both are normal and harmless system files.
