WinThesaurus version 1.2 — An English language thesaurus
WinThesaurus is a thesaurus (for finding synonyms: words of same or
similar meaning). WinThesaurus can help when you are looking for a
particular word but can only think of a similar word. Type the word
you know into WinThesaurus (or find it in a list), click once, and you
have a list of synonyms. You can select one and copy it to the
Windows® clipboard with two more clicks. WinThesaurus uses the Moby
Thesaurus data for its roots and synonyms.

WinThesaurus has 30,260 root words and phrases, and over 2.5 million
synonyms. That is an average of 83 synonyms per root.

Version 1.2 adds a dropdown history list to the text entry box.

Two more

- the Thesaurus in OpenOffice
http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/thes_dic.html
if you need the niceties of UK English - the English language OOo
thesaurus in OOo 1.x is based on MobyThesaurus - you should read
- a UK English thesaurus for 00o
http://brit-thesaurus.sourceforge.net/
- other language thesaurus for OpenOffice: Czech, German, French,
Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Slovakian, can be installed right from the web.
On the OpenOffice website they say that you can also create your own
thesaurus

- the Thesaurus in Word.

I use both to great efficiency

IMHO, WordWeb (even for the commercial Pro version) is no match for
Moby.

For the dictionary part, the pro version provides much lesser info than
GCIDE and WordNet combined (in Moby), and its free version is even a
cut-down.

For the thesaurus part -- imcompetent, at least.

Maybe Moby is a little bit bloated. Anyway, I really like the its
appearance, you won't get eyestrains if you spend a lot of time on it.
Bright white background bothers me.

Thanks for your nice list! :)

You have to wonder how good a thesaurus is when it doesn't include
commonly used slang.

Several extremely common slang words are not present and this is a
concern as you may want to replace slang words with non-slang.

Or, maybe there is an option which enables slang or another dictionary
of slang that you can download?

Thank you. I forgot about that one ;-)

Here is one more thesaurus program giving my complete
dictionary/thesaurus library when taking into account all others
mentioned, just to make it a complete list and not just a 'faves'
list. Real small(808kb) and very handy when doing a quick report:

THE THINKING MAN'S THESAURUS
- Thesaurus and word-prompter -
v1.3

This program is an ideal pop-up utility for when the right word is
eluding you. It includes a powerful thesaurus and a dictionary which
can check the spelling of individual words as well as provide you with
a list of similarly spelt words. The package includes a version of the
program which automatically links to the popular freeware dictionary
WordWeb (You'll need the 16bit version - 4.3Mb), for looking-up
definitions of words.

For Win 3.1, Win 95/98/ME, WinNT/2000/XP.

That's it! I'm now dry of dictionary/thesaurus programs until
something new hits the acf block, or from wherever ;-)

And don't forget that GREAT Google hack; "Define:"

Here's an example if you haven't used it already;

Works every time, and brother do I use it ;-)
