I installed a driver update for what I assumed was my sound device
(integrated) and then when it installed, but failed during install and now I
can't uninstall it, my sound doesn't work anymore. I get an error message
when I tried reinstalling Direct X 9.0b that reads:

"The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\ksuser.dll is not a valid
windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, that would be great.

You mean you can not revert to the previous drivers via right-click My
Computer, select Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, and looking for a red
X, selecting that device, its Properties, and then Driver, and then Roll
Back Driver?

Have you tried doing a System Restore?

If you anser yes to both of the above then you might have to reinstall
Windows while Windows is up and running (and be carefull not to allow a
reformat or to do a new installation, you'd instead want an upgrade repair
selection). If using OEM Windows (you didn't get a *retail* version CD of XP
that was used for the original installation) then your only reinstall option
is a full restoration, so be sure to burn or somehow backup your user files
before you do that because you'll be putting it back to like it first was
when you first got it.
