Many of you yesterday noticed that you could not download the above numbered
Windows Update, although it formed part of Microsoft's monthly security
bulletin. I tried to download the update myself five times, as recorded in my
Windows Update History.

Some kindly people in this newsgroup told us how we could download and
install the update manually, which I did. Today, my Windows Update History
gave no indication that the file had been downloaded or installed. So I
manually downloaded and (according to my Windows Wizard) installed it again.
I then opened Windows Update and found no indication that such installation
had occurred.

So I opened Windows Update again, to discover if there might be any updates
yet to be downloaded. And the indication was that there were zero matters to
be downloaded. So, somewhere in the system there is an unrecorded download of
a file that refused to download under the automatic download system. And
refuses to show itself as a file in my system.

As I purchased a computer (laptop) with XP Home installed, I am certain that
if I call Microsoft to ask what has happened, I will be told (as have others)
that as I have an OEM copy of XP, I should contact my supplier for an
explanation. Well, I have a Sony Vaio laptop and you know Sony won't have a
clue. And the shop where I bought the laptop is only, well, a shop.

I think we are owed an explanation from Microsoft as to what has gone wrong.
Hiding below the parapet will not suffice. Frankly the words "off" and
"pissed" leap to one's lips.

If anyone has a rational reason for what has gone wrong, will they very
kindly let the rest of us know.

And if anyone from Microsoft is reading this, I say: Get a life, don't tell
us we're OEM (translates as "po' folks"). Tell us what went wrong.

What you describe is normal and not a problem although it can be a source of
confusion..
You manually downloaded and installed the update, Windows Update was not
involved.
Since Windows Update was not involved, the update will not be recorded in
the Windows Update history.

Open Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Make sure there is a tic
mark in the box at the top for Show updates. Scroll down to Windows XP
- Software Updates. Is that update listed? If so it's been installed.
If it's installed manually it won't show in the MU update history.

Thank you for the swift response. But all I can say is the system should show
it. If it doesn't then the system is wrong and should be corrected by
Microsoft. Windows Update ought to recognise the download even if it doesn't.
In any event, it does recognise the download, because I am now informed by WU
that there are zero matters to download.

Windows Update recognizes the installation of the update.
But that has nothing to do with the Windows Update history since Windows
Update does not read the history..
The Windows Update history does not show the manual update because the
manual update was not a Windows Update event.
You seem to think the Installation History should show all updates, but it
does not because it is not intended to show updates installed without going
through Windows Update.

Nothing is wrong.
What you describe is normal and functioning properly.

If you want to see a complete listing of Updates, Use Regedit &
navigate to:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Updates\Windows

You'll see two key headings, SP2 and SP3. The entries under the
keys are sorted by KB Document ID.

Is there any way to edit the Installation History? I show 3 failed attempts
to install that update before I manually installed it.
I'd like to clean up the listing by deleting those failed install entries if
it's possible.

Darrell.
There probably is but because it is history, I do not worry about.
Would you remove something from your B-58 page simply because the history
portrayed was inconvenient to you? Or is accurate history important?

Nice B-58 page by the way, just slightly before my time.

Hi,

No, it is not possible to edit the Installation History...
