Once again it appears that MS is creating probs all round with the latest
batch of updates.
I have been reading through the windows.update and I can see from that there
are problems with KB917344(MS06-230.
I have this one on current offer.
What is confusing is the knowledge base refers back to KB916281, which
appears to have been on offer a few days ago, with a suggestion that this is
installed along with KB917344.
But I have not had the offer of 916281 in the last few days.
916281 is also causing probs for some.
So, is 917344 and patch/fix for the 916281 or what.
This whole update thing seems to get worse and worse.
OR in my case, is MS getting its own back because I keep blocking that
barsteward WGA from phoning home??
Linux is looking prettier and prettier after each Mad Tuesday.

Are you waiting for Automatic Updates to kick in and offer you the latest
updates or have you already checked in at Windows/Microsoft Update to
install them?

<QP>
Caveats: Microsoft is releasing this update as a companion to the update
included with Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-021: Cumulative Security
Update for Internet Explorer (916281). We recommend that you install this
update at the same time as that update as a security update in that bulletin
could expose this vulnerability or cause application compatibility issues.

Hi PA
No. I have auto turned off. Have for more than 18 months.
I pick and choose what I want.
As I have said in another group, I have read the link from 917344 to 916281,
for an hour or more. I can see they are linked. Well if I read it correct.
There seems to be a couple of days between these two - I don't know - more
confused than ever.
The point for me is that I have not been offered 916281 so I have not
downloaded and installed it. So I read it that I do not need 917344. Does
that make sense to you??
I am tired from four/five hours reading all the stuff in articles and
knowledge bases.
Its bed-time and I have had enough of these Mad Tuesdays.
Good night

Automatic updates updated my computer last night even though Windows Update
had denied me because of an invalid key. Did Microsoft decide to go
lenient?

Please confirm: You're running WinXP SP2 and neither 916281 nor 917344 is
offered to the machine at Windows/Microsoft Update; furthermore, neither are
installed/found in Add/Remove Programs.

Automatic Updates will install to illegal WinXP, manual windows update
won't. Go figure ;-)

And you installed WGA.......

Maybe it's because Automatic Updates Custom still asks you if you want to
install the validation tool while Windows Updates doesn't give you a choice.

WGA - Yes,
I was well and truly had on that one :-)
I agree with the principle of WGA but not the continued imposition that it
is there all the time, against my wishes.
But that is another story - well discussed already.

Hi again PA

No - not exactly.
The following are currently offered for download:
917344
918439
911280
917953
890830{downloaded this one}
914389

916281 for the moment is MISSING{presumed dead :-))}
This is the main reason for holding back at the moment.
If I have read the articles correctly then I believe that the 916281 should
be done before 917344?
If so then I will go into MS directly and download.
But I shall still wait to see how these latest ones are effecting other's
systems.
furthermore, neither are installed/found in Add/Remove Programs.

Correct - but this is expected as I have not downloaded and installed any of
the above - yet{sorry one exception}
Last download and update was:
904942 on 31 May 2006 for Win XP
I have downloads hidden but they are all drivers/software I don't need or
use.
Further info - may be material - I have ZA controlling WGA movements, in or
out.
As a side note, did I read months and months ago that these updates should
be downloaded and installed in the ORDER they are presented and of course
one at a time?

1. Have you neglected to state that you're currently running IE7 Beta2? Was
IE7 Beta2 ever installed?

2. If you disable all of ZA's "protections", is 916281 offered by Windows
Update? If SpySweeper's installed and you disable it's IE and Windows
System "shields", is 916281 offered by Windows Update? Do you have any
Norton or McAfee applications installed? Spybot or Ad-Watch?

3. Are you aware that Automatic Updates has a "Notify Only" option (i.e., no
updates are downloaded or installed without your permission)?

4. All of your posting about this would have been more appropriate at
Windows Update newsgroup.

For now, let's not get sidetracked over the order that updates should be
downloaded/installed.

Hi PA
Either I am not explaining myself clearly using correct terminology or you
have missed/not got all my responses to your questions on 17 June.
My replies/info requested are intertwined/in-line etc

Was IE7 Beta2 ever installed?

I.E. 7 - would not touch it with a very long pole - I am not a tester.
2. If you disable all of ZA's "protections", is 916281 offered > by
Windows Update?

Not too sure what you mean by 'disable all ZA protections' - but do not like
the idea of doing that.
Just in case you have missed what I have said before, at the moment I have
ZA set to ask me if WGA can phone home.
I am thinking of letting it have its way later tonight.
If SpySweeper's installed and you disable it's IE and Windows System
"shields", is 916281 offered by Windows > Update?

I do not have SpySweeper.
Do you have any Norton or McAfee applications installed? Spybot or
Ad-Watch?

My security progs are - Netguard, ZA, MS Antispy, Ad-Aware SE Personal,
Spyware Blaster, MS MalSoftware Removal Tool.
3. Are you aware that Automatic Updates has a "Notify Only" > option
(i.e., no updates are downloaded or installed without your permission)?

Yes I am aware - I have said before, I have auto turned off - Notify Only -
have done for 18 months or so. I pick want I want to be downloaded.
4. All of your posting about this would have been more appropriate at
Windows Update newsgroup. For now, let's not get sidetracked over the
order that updates > should be downloaded/installed.

Yes - I did realise that after I had posted, but hoped it would not have
been noticed - now it has been brought to any readers attention ;-) ;-)
When I have more time tonight to concentrate, I think I will allow WGA to
phone home and see what happens.
Thanks for your help etc
I will update

When I have more time tonight to concentrate, I think I will allow WGA to

To get updates via Windows Update website, yes, you must first install any
necessary WGA-related ActiveX Controls.
Not too sure what you mean by 'disable all ZA protections' - but do not
like the idea of doing that.

One or more of ZA's "protections" may be interfering with
downloading/installing both the necessary WGA ActiveX Controls and the
scanning for, downloading and/or installing of updates. Just configuring ZA
to allow Windows Update isn't enough; Disabling or even uninstalling ZA
won't help either. Contact ZA support.
Yes I am aware - I have said before, I have auto turned off - Notify Only
- have done for 18 months or so. I pick want I want to be downloaded.

I'm still not clear on this one: Having AU "turned off" means you've
disabled it entirely. Are you saying that you have AU enabled and Notify
Only as your chosen setting?

Hi PA
I do appreciate your patience in this matter.
I knew it would be my 'compu-speak' meaning something different to yourself.
Replies/obs etc interdispursed/entwined/cut spliced just to make things more
confusing

Well I didn't last night - it was father's-day of course and after I had
consumed a bottle of 'shampers' all by myself I was just about with it to
not let myself near a keyboard.
To get updates via Windows Update website, yes, you must > first install
any necessary WGA-related ActiveX Controls.

Yes I do have WGA installed and realise that I only get the critical updates
if I do not let it phone home.
At the moment, I have ZA deny WGA access to phone home.
One or more of ZA's "protections" may be interfering with
downloading/installing both the necessary WGA ActiveX > Controls and the
scanning for, downloading and/or installing > of updates. Just
configuring ZA to allow Windows Update > isn't enough; Disabling or even
uninstalling ZA won't help > either. Contact ZA support.

No its me doing the blocking with the help of ZA. I have WGA in place and
have updated it when asked - well up to now. That is why I said I would
remove the block and allow WGA to do its 'dirty deed'.

Better explained below - I hope. I do not let MS download when it wants
to - I pick the time and place.
I'm still not clear on this one: Having AU "turned off" means > you've
disabled it entirely. Are you saying that you have AU > enabled and
Notify Only as your chosen setting?

See what I mean about compu-speak - this is my setting in
Updates.

'Automatic Updates Turned ON
Your computer is set to receive notifications when new updates are
available.'

Sorry - I feel a total prat!
I get the notification and go in and see what is on offer and act
accordingly.

I do hope this is all a lot clearer now. My initial observation was that I
had the normal notification re the recent 5/6 criticals - made a note of the
KB numbers - waited a day or two to see what was happening with others - saw
that someone was having probs with KB916281 - checked my list - it was not
there - looked up the info for it and saw it was Xref with KB917344 - read
this info - went off on a couple of side issues and came to the conclusion
that KB916281 should be downloaded before KB917344.
So I am holding back on any download until I find KB916281 or go in and get
it - then I will do all the others.
The order in which to download was a supplementary question and in
particular with reference to those two KBs mentioned above.
Look, if I still have not made myself clear, please, PLEASE do not waste
anymore time on me - go help some other more deserving lost sole.

Further to the below, I have allowed WGA back into my life and have
downloaded all the latest updates(8 in all) and they included that wayward
KB916281.
I did a couple each day just to see if there were any problems and so
far.........
Many thanks for your infinite patience PA.
Can't wait for the next 'Black Tuesday'
Is it true that the daily scanning will stay until later this year, and then
be on a fortnightly basis?
And those with dodgy XP will not be able to update Defender or get IE7 - now
that is spiteful ;-) ;-)
