Update Drivers Never Works

One of my computers running XP SP2 won't recognize a plug and play USB
keyboard, or even a Microsoft wireless mouse. Moreover, when I grant
permission to check the Internet for drivers, XP never finds any.

Also when I try updating drivers on devices from the device manager, the
attempt always fails.

Any ideas why this won't work on this one computer. On another, this works
just fine.

Microsoft only distributes drivers after the hardware manufacturer makes and
pays for the certification process.
If that has not been done, a driver will not be found so what you are seeing
is probably normal.
Even then it is usually best to get drivers directly from the hardware
manufacturer instead of Microsoft.

Okay, Thanks.

But how does that explain that the *Microsoft* wireless mouse will not
install itself automatically by checking the Internet for a driver?

There may not be a driver on Windows Update.
Windows Update only finds drivers submitted to Windows Update.
Searching for a Driver Update through Device Manager is similar.
Just because a driver is available does not mean it is available for the
Device Manager to search.
