Unwilling to upgrade to SP2... yet

Based on a host of problems, I do NOT want to update to SP2 of Windows
XP, at least not yet. I need to make sure my computer keeps working.

However, the annoying little "You have a windows update" window keeps
poking its head in. Is there a way that I can tell windows update that
I want critical security updates as they come along, but do NOT want to
upgrade to SP2?

If so, how?

You might have to turn off Automatic Update. To do this,
from the Control Panel click on Automatic Update and
click on the radio button that says Turn Off Automatic
Updates, then Apply, then OK. If your Control Panel does
not show Automatic Update, click on System and then on
the Automatic Update tab and continue on as above.
Afterwards you will have to update manually. If anyone
else knows a differet way please post.

Thanks for this idea... and I may need to resort to it. However, it is
my hope that I can continue getting critical security updates that might
apply to the original XP even though I have not upgraded to SP2.

So, as you said, please post!

I have deployed SP2 to 4 machines of various types and vintages, and have
not encountered any problems whatsoever. I suspect that those reporting
problems had a poorly maintained installation of the Windows OS prior to the
upgrade, and the upgrade merely exacerbated whatever problems were already
there.

Well well, 4 machines of "various types and vintages", that's quite the
extensive (or if you prefer, all-encompassing) testing there. Perhaps you
should offer your boundless consulting services to Microsoft themselves?
Seeing as your suspicions that "those reporting problems had a poorly
maintained installation of the Windows OS prior to the upgrade" are as backed
up with about as much experience as a paper MCSE, everyone might as well
embrace SP2 without hesitance and hey, should any problem occurs, we'll know
it's due to sheer incompetence on our part.

Thanks for your helpful tidbit Mighty Bobby. Your suspicions due to your
comprehensive knowledge and testing exacerbated me.

Merely posting a counterpoint to the doom-and-gloomers (I think that suits
you well) that think that SP2 will prevent all apps from running, will crash
every system it is put on , etc. And to answer the post...

I do not have a paper MCSE; I have deployed it to 4 machines with no
problems, while you are talking about a machine that "may" have problems
"if" you install SP2.

I just wanted to make others that read this thread aware that SP2 is not
necessarily evil. It can and often does integrate seamlessly onto a
properly configured and well-maintained system.

You and your paranoia can now go back to whence you came.

The world is full of the silent majority with no problems, that is
why you never hear from them.
The number of complaints you see here, read about elsewhere is small
in comparison to the total number of computers getting a Service Pack
every day.

What was said applies to many of those with issues.
Others have bad downloads or issues during installation.
Still others have incompatible hardware or software whether known or
unknown.

The majority of issues can be resolved by updating software, drivers
or making adjustments to the firewall.
None in this group are a fault of SP-2.

There are also those with unknown causes... I suppose you can give
specific details of the cause of these.

Considering the total number of windows XP computers getting SP-2 with
no two identical, I think it is amazing a program especially a Service
Pack can be designed and deployed under such circumstances.
Nowhere else ca you find such diversity and success in one
installation.

How about 1500 machines? I only have about 1000 more yet - will that meet
you minimal install requirements - they all of course are on a domain, Win2k
domain that is, and they are many brands and vintages, IBM Laptops, Dell
Workstations, HP, Gateway and Compaq Desktops - will that do - will that
erode some of the doom and gloom you are advertising?

Hi Carey, and thanks for your tip.

Doesn't seem to work though. I downloaded the software and ran it, and
I do indeed have the new registry key in place, namely:

HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

The "Default" value is not set.

The "DoNotAllowXPSP2" value, a REG_DWORD, is set to 1.

However, even after rebooting the system, Windows Update hounds me to
download and install SP2. Do you have any ideas? Many thanks...
