Unwelcome Scanning

Something is scanning my computer at boot up for approx.10min and again at
08.00 for approx.3min.
None of the four protection softwares (three of which I use to scan my
computer weekly and the scans last much longer!) I installed are programmed
to do this, so is there a way of finding what/who is scanning/getting
information from my computer?

The thing to do would be to explore all of your startup programs, so that
you are aware of them all.

You can spot (and disable for troubleshooting purposes) the main ones via
Start > run > msconfig > startup
Start > run > msconfig > Services > Check 'Hide all Microsoft services'

There are also many other tools which will give you a more comprehensive
list of startup programs. 'Autoruns' and 'startuplist' are a couple of good
ones, which you can readily find via google.

Opening up your protection software packages individually and exploring the
menus for scheduled scan options is another possibility.

I was more than a little surprised to hear the following from "Zygy"

I don't think that you should be using 4 different protection/anti-virus
software.

I think that you should find one good one and then stick to it.

The software will learn from or have access to a database of reported
viruses.

I think that having numerous protection s/w is overdoing it and might itself
cause problems.

But I am not an expert.

Thank you all for the replies. Just as a way of explanation not all my
protection software are anti-virus. There are other invaders besides these.
Microsoft Malicious software removal tool is one of them and Anti Spayware
is another just to mention the obvious ones.

No, there's nothing wrong with using multiples. What you shouldn't do is
have more than one anti-virus program performing resident protection
simultaneously, because they can interfere with each other. But using
multiples to do scans at different times is fine. In fact, when it comes to
anti-spyware programs, more than one is *required* for decent protection.

Note that Eric Howes, who has done extensive testing on Anti-Spyware
products
states

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the best-performing
anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one quarter of the
"critical" files and Registry entries"

Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete while the scans are going on will show you what's
running at the time.
