How can I get rid of (I don't mean HIDE) unwanted system tray icons. I know
how to hide them. I want them GONE.

Start - Run. Type msconfig and hit Enter. Click the Startup tab. Uncheck
those you don't want, and reboot.

Besides the other answers here, also, keep in mind some programs will create
another startup icon, and *recheck* themselves to start up, even after being
unchecked in msconfig . (Although I haven't seen this with very many
programs, Music Match is a good example of this)...If you don't uncheck the
box in preferences for MMJB, it will override msconfig.

Thanks Frank. The first time I logged on after doing this I got a box
warning of a "partial" boot. After checking the "I don't want to see this
message again" it has rebooted fine.

What a great web page. I'm glad other people are as sick of the corporate
software mentality as I am, and that people with knowlege are willing to
take their time to write webpages to give us the options that the software
companies should already be giving us.

Whatever happened to "The customer is always right" ?

Thanks Willie.

I've been running startup monitor for a while, and it is somewhat helpful,
although many genuine programs (like windows updates) will automatically tag
the update to run at startup. If you don't allow this, the update won't be
installed. Distinguishing between programs that have a genuine need to run
at startup, and the programs that put their needs ahead of yours, is not so
easy.

I do a lot of video editing, and need all the speed and memory I can get.
Memory hogs and programs that pop up in the background without notice are a
continual source of irritation.
