Unwanted Sound

Everytime I use Internet Explorer, I get this bleep sound every couple
minutes. The frequency of the sound made me think it was from a pop-up
blocker, but I've disabled every known sound device and option on my
computer. It's a major annoyance and I've been trying to get rid of it for
months. Can anyone help me????

The computer has an internal speaker, might it be coming from that? to
check, just unplug your speakers from your computer and if it happens again
then you know its coming from the internal speaker. if not what, what type
of adware blocking software do you use? maybe we can narrow it down that
way.

Ok I tried unplugging the speakers, and it still happens...so i guess that
means it's coming from an internal speaker...now what?

ok... we're on the right path... depending on your system there maybe an
option to mute the speaker directly from the volume control, by double
clicking the little speaker down by the clock, selecting options, then
properties. if you have more than one "mixer device" try this with each.
ensure that "playback" is selected then scroll down the list under "show the
following volume controls" and look for "PC Speaker" if its there, check it.
then click ok. now you should have a volume control labled "PC Speaker" that
you can adjust and/or mute. If this doesn't work you may have to look for an
option in your bios.
if this is the case let me know and I will try to help you through it.
Now we need to try and figure out what is activating your speaker, what kind
of spy/adware protection do you have on your computer?
what does the noise sound like? is it a single quick beep like when you
start your computer?
are there any boxes that pop up?

OK, I did that, but there is no 'pc speaker' listed in the volume controls,
it lists: volume control, wave, SW synth, cd player, microphone, and line in.
As for spyware, I have: spybot-search and destroy, and pest patrol. I also
have norton and pc doctor for windows (i don't know what category these fall
under)
Nothing pops up during the sound, and it only occurs when I use the
internet. It sounds like: "blupe!". The frequency of it depends on the
website. Sometimes it's only a couple times, and sometimes it's just once
when the page is loading.
Thanks for your help with this, I really appreciate it...

If you use pest patrol this may help..

1. Click the "Options" tab.
2. Click the "Interface" sub-tab.
3. Underneath "Sounds", uncheck "Alarm on detection" and "Play done sound".

Both those boxes were already unchecked. I've been trying to solve this
mystery sound for a while...I've already gone through all my pest/virus
programs and unchecked and sound options. My internet sound option is
unchecked as well. Is there any way i can run a search or something to see
where the sound is coming from...maybe it's from a program that i would never
guess is related or something?

Is it possible that the bloop is coming from the Modem Speaker? If so, it
can be disabled in Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options.

The fact that the sound is heard only when you are in line seems to point in
this direction. Or does it?

good luck,
haim

Thanks Haim...i went to my control panel and turned off the modem speaker,
but the bloop still ensues. In response to your question, I'm always online
but the bloop only happens when i use internet explorer. is this not the most
frustrating mystery?

Another shot in the dark:

Look at the following Registry Key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\Explorer\Navigating\.current]

Is there, in the Data Value, perchance, a path to a WAV file? (other than
the navigating bar.wav of SP2 which is normal if you installed Service Pack
2).

ok, in the current file there is only a default listing with nothing in the
data value. In the default file (the next one after current) there's a
default with the data: "%SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Start.wav"

are we on the right track? now what....

I don't have PestPatrol, but I bet it has to do with it's cookie blocker.
I've seen posts about it before. I googled the groups for "Pest Patrol
bloop" and found the following:

If so, disable the sound by R-Clicking the Taskbar PP icon>cookie
patrol>disable sound. OR, you may access the PP files in C:\Program files
and rename the cookiecrunch.wav to cookiecrunch.old wav (or make a new .wav
file of your own as a replacement).

It worked! Thank you SO much Karen!!! I just ended up deleting the
cookiecrunch.wav file. Thanks again.

hi i have the same problem but buzz bleeps every couple of seconds!! i don't
have pest patrol but have zone alarm, spy bot and adaware. i think it is zone
alarm but am unsure of how to - 'C:\Program files
and rename the cookiecrunch.wav to cookiecrunch.old wav (or make a new .wav
file of your own as a replacement).'
