unwanted highlights of cells

I have a small problem with my excel sheet. If I use the
tab function everything works normal, but the minute I try
to use the mouse and select a cell the pointer highlights
every cell that it crosses and it won't let me out of the
work sheet unless I manually close the worksheet. When I
reopen excel the same thing happens again. I have seen
this once before and I simply started to push buttons and
click on everything and it turned off. Needless to say
that is not working this time and it is starting to become
a little bit annoying. Can anyone help please? How do I
turn this thing off for future knowledge?

try hitting F8 (toggle the 'extended mode'). If this does not help
