Unwanted file shortcuts keep getting created

On my Toshiba laptop with Windows XP Home Edition I very often find that when I copy a file from one drive to another, a shortcut of the file is created in the target drive. And sometimes a shortcut of the source drive is also created in the target drive. This is very annoying and more than once has led me to mistake the shortcut file for the real file (and, for example, send the shortcut to a friend instead of the real file)

Any ideas what causes this and how I can stop it

Thanks for any hellp

Thanks for your response. But why is this necessary? My desktop computer - also Windows XP - does not act like this. Is there a setting in Control Panel or the Registry or somewhere where I can turn off this feature? I'd like to be able to just drag from one drive to another without shortcuts being generated

Right click on the file and drag it..it will give you the option to copy or
move the file.
