Unusual networking problem

Hi. I have an unusual networking problem. My network of 4 XP Pro
machines works fine when NetBEUI is installed. When I uninstall NetBEUI
and try to use tcp/ip, the computers don't see one other. In fact, one
of them does not even see itself. I get an error saying I may not have
priviledges to see the workgroup computers. This computer used to run
Win98 and was upgraded a long time ago to XP Pro. I uninstalled my
firewall to no avail. While this was going on, each computer could
still go online thru the router w/o any problems. When I reinstalled
NetBEUI, all was right w/ the world again.

I don't even know where to look for the source of the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any comments.

The first thing you have to do is see if you can ping (make sure the XP
firewall is disabled for each LAN connection) each machine from another.

Connectivity is present or you wouldn't have received that error message.
Make sure NetBIOS is enabled over TCP/IP.

Tried that. Couldn't do it. The machine that could not see itself in
the network neighborhood could ping itself, but not the others. But
things work fine w/ NetBEUI installed. This is why I believe it must be
a software problem.

Make sure:
1. all PCs belong to the same workgroup [winkey+pause/break > Computer
Name tab to verify]
2. all PCs are using compatible address's EG: 192.168.0.1 ~ 254 subnet
mask 255.255.255.0
3. all users have to logon with a password
4. a resource is shared [drive, folder etc]
