1.4 athlon operating at 1.3 with cpu temp of 70c at idle. thermal grease has
been replaced on the round evercool heatsink, h/s is hot. Also if I add a
slave hdd there is 1 sec. runtime then instant shutdown, no fans, nothing.
Unknown history on unit.

The processor fan is probably damaged... 70C/158F is too hot.. the Athlon is
said to be stable up to 65C/150F.. so no wonder it shuts down. You might
want to open the CPU case and start the PC to see if the fan runs at all.

The fan works. Perhaps a larger fan is requires. But the shutdown when a
slave hdd
is added is caused by? Can I mix a Seagate hdd and a W/D hdd?

But the question is, does the fan work at normal speed? Something is not
right and 70C at idle is not normal by any means. I suggest you replace the
processor fan even if it seems to run normally especially if the PC is a
little old. And add a case fan to make cool air available for the CPU fan,
also look in the taskmanager to see if any process is running at high CPU
usage and causing it to run hot. My guess is when you connect the slave HD
it draws power and diminishes available power to the fan... You may have a
defective PSU power supply.
As far as I know, HD brand should not make a difference or cause the
problem. But adding a slave HD may put a load on the CPU and PSU and maybe
it's what makes the PC shut down, maybe both heat and low power cause the
shutdowns.
