Unsolvable windows networking problem

Could someone help me with a networking problem which has me stumped?

My setup:
Cable modem attached to Netgear WGR 614 v 2 wireless router
Wired connection to desktop (named JUDITH) running Windows XP Home
SP2
Wired and wireless connection to laptop (named toshtop) running
Windows XP Professional SP2

Problem:
When the laptop is connected to the router by ethernet cable
everything works OK.

The problem is that when using the wireless connection for the laptop
it all goes wrong:
- the desktop can see both itself and the laptop in “View workgroup
computers” – but double clicking on the laptop gives the message
“Toshtop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.”
- the laptop can see only itself in “View workgroup computers” – but
it can still access shared folders on the desktop

The results of a browstat vw 1 command on each computer shows:
- the desktop sees both computers and both are listed as master
browsers (MBR)
- the laptop sees only itself (it is listed as an MBR)

So it looks like there is a browser problem. When the laptop is
connected to the router with an ethernet cable there is no browser
problem. With the laptop connected by cable I have played around
shutting down the computers and restarting: both desktop and laptop
are able to be MBR depending on which is booted up first.

I have also tried a different laptop to see if there is a specific
problem with toshtop (a Toshiba Tecra). The other laptop (an IBM
Thinkpad) reproduces exactly the same problems. So probably not a
problem with toshtop or its wireless network card.

I have spent lots of time doing everything suggested in PChuck’s
Troubleshooting Network Neighborhood Problems but nothing has
changed. I must be missing something. Please please help!

Here is some info which I think I should post: this is my first post
so be gentle if I have got something wrong.

Check your firewall settings on your wireless adapter.

Is the router security set to MAC Address Filtering?
Perhaps WEP key problem etc?
