Unshared folders still show up...

Am using a WinXP PC. Under My Network Places, there are still a few shared
folders on another office PC that were UN-SHARED a day or so ago:

My Network Places
c-letters on Bill's PC (but I un-shared it on Bill's PC)
c-docs on Sam's PC (but I un-shared it...)
My Web Sites on MSN (?)
www.mywebsite.com (ok, belongs to me)

Refresh view doesn't do anything. Will these go away eventually? Is it a
certain number of days or re-boots, or what?

Thanks for any insights

Hi George,

The timeout period for shares is 48 hours. After it no longer sees the
share for 48 hours, it will remove the shortcut from My Network Places. If
it detects it again after 48 hours, it will reappear.

To make it so that shortcut is never detected again, all you have to do is
delete it from My Network Places, and we will never redetect.

Hope this helps.

The timeout period for shares is 48 hours? Where did you get this info,
Nico?

Thank you Nico,

I noticed your Microsoft address... is there a chance you can answer my two
other posts in this group?... which are entitled...

Is wake-on-lan (WOL) easy to set up?

Odd entry in My Network Places

Thanks,
George

Hi Eric,

I am the tester for this feature, that is how I know what the timeout period
is.

Just to clarify...if a share cannot be seen for 48 hours, it will just
remove it. However, if it see's it again, it will populate back into My
Network Places.

Hi George,

Would you mind reposting the other two questions and I'll see if I know or
can find the answers for you? I've already purged my messages and no longer
have those two.

Thanks Nico, both are re-posted with subjects of:

Nico,

Would this explain why all I can get is something like "access denied" from
my WinXP PC#1 when I look at another WinXP PC#2 across the room

I simply shared the entire c-drive on PC#2, but PC#1 gets some type of
denied message. It's certainly possible that I had just "deleted" it from
My Network Places on PC#1 at some point, in the early WinXP "learning
months" and then re-shared it again on PC#2. (I can share certan
sub-folders like PC#2's "documents" but not all of PC#2's c-drive).

1) Is this the reason for why PC#1 can't access c-drive on PC#2, or 2) can I
restore it somewho so I can get to the whole c-drive on PC#2?

Thanks
George

Thanks Nico, there was just one more a few lines above this once, with
subject: removing shares, access denied.

Thanks again for any insights you could offer,
George

Hi George,

The root of a drive, like C, is shared out by default but only a computer
administrator or a member of the Administrators group can access this. By
default, the PC2 will try and connect to PC1 as a Guest. You can try
connecting to the C$ drive on PC1 by doing the following:

Start - Right Click My Computer - Map Network Drive.
Pick any drive letter.
Enter the path \\<machinename\c$
Click on Connect using different name.
Enter the user name and password of an administrator on PC1.
Click Finish.

This should open up a window to the share on the computer. If you want this
to persist across logins, then you will have to check the box for "Reconnect
at logon".
