Dan

good afternoon,
a window frequently pops up telling me that there are unrecognized
versions of Windows as they have been replaced. "would I like to keep
them?", I am asked.

This first happened after I ran System Mechanic and got rid of what the
program said was "extra".

The computer freaked out and would not work after that, "locked up".
Installed XP Professional on top of my facory installed XP Home. The
"unrecognized versions" still appears. Strangely, the notice does not
appear if i keep the XP Professional CD in the CD drive at all times.
When I take it out, from time to time the pop up warning will appear.

any ideas? Have been told to reformat from scratch by some here at the
lab. Also the computer is wicked slow sometimes, even after i have done
speen disk, defrag, system/settings/advanced have been also set to
maximun performance, but still seems to be really slow.

I have an HP 4200 1,5GHz 512 RAM laptop

I think you've totally answered your own question. You said all this
happened "after I ran System Mechanic". Cause and effect. These
programs that delete duplicate files are destructive. With hard drives
so nice and big nowadays, there is no reason to ever use one of these
stupid programs. It's not like when we were trying to squeeze every
last kb of space out of a 2GB drive.

Because of your "repairs", the smartest thing for you to do at this
point is to format the drive and install clean. Here is a link to
information about doing that:

Don't feel bad about this - that's how all us computer geeks learned, by
breaking stuff and fixing it. Just one word of caution: when you get to
the part where you reinstall all your programs, don't reinstall System
Mechanic!

Cheers,

Malke

Thanks for your help about the System Mechanic wrecking my computer.
Appreciate the link to help me correct the problem. Little by little I
hope to distance myself from computer idiot, and close in on the still
distant moniker of computer geek.
