Unreal 2

I played this fine under W98 but am having troubles under XP. It crashes all
the time with various long errors. I tried with and without the patch and,
when that didn't work, I followed the readme advice and disabled EAX,
shadows, detailed textures and put the details down throughout. It still
crashes. Someone told me that setting the channels to lowest may help, but
it didn't. Like I said, it ran on exactly the same machine with 98, but XP
wants none of it, despite all windows, sound, graphics being updated. Any
ideas?

Thanks

Hi, I managed to run this fine under XP, certainly this is a game that
should never need compatibility mode, have you installed all the patches?

I'm afraid so :(

I have just realised one thing though: the sound card in this PC is an
Audigy 2, where as on the old '98' machine it was just a SoundBlaster Live.
I wonder if that could be affecting things?

Hi again, ok have you the latest drivers for that sound card. Mine used to
also crash, however the latest patch cured that. Do any other games have the
problem and could you possibly post up more of your PC's specs.....

I sure do have the latest drivers (and the Windows update stuff). This
trouble only seems to occur with Unreal 2 , though. My PC is as follows:

AMD 2600XP
Radeon 9700 Pro
Audigy 2
XP home

Never tried it on 98, but i got it working fine here on XP Home (at
least used to work fine, now it crashes as soon as i press a key on
the keyboard) without using compatibility mode, so that game isn't
incompatible with XP at least.

Hi again, sorry to be a bit long winded but I still require more information
as too your hardware, motherboard, PSU, also are you overclocking in any
way? These drivers your are using are they the MS update ones, or are they
the hardware manufacturers own? Lastly, what other games have you tried?
Cheers,
Chris

Forget it, it's of no consequence what so ever. What on earth would any of
that have to do with it? The game worked fine before. It's XP that is the
trouble. You know what? I just tried Pharaoh and it rebooted my machine. XP
can not seem to run old games and I wish I'd never bought it.

can you post your dxdiag.txt. I have played Unreal 2 on many different
machiens on XP. I have also played Pharaoh as well without problems.

to get your dxdiag, click start>run>"dxdiag" and save all information, the
paste it in your post, thanks.

Launch game and disable any EAX or similar 3D sound technologies under
sound settings.

Many games gave problems with sound. (or Creative drivers)
