Ok, talk to me like I am 4. On my new laptop, which runs
on Windows XP, when I am choosing which person to log in
as, I see "4 unread mail messages" by my name. I have
checked my outlook and outlook express repeatedly but I
can not find these unread messages. Can somebody please
point me in the right direction.

Thanks

It sounds like you are running Windows Messenger. Do you see a green
colored icon in the shape of a person? It's in the lower right of
your screen. Double click on it to open it. See what it says about
your unread email.

I have a Hotmail account associated with my Windows
Messenger/Passport. Every time that account gets an email, I see an
alert. When I am logged off, it shows the number of unread messages
in that account.

I suspect this is what is happening with you.

Compliments of Kelly:

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)

To remove an account or to change the count manually Got to:
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.
