My hew hard drive with newly installed Win XP home
totally freezes, sometimes several times an hour and
sometimes a couple of hours apart. No mouse or keyboard
response, and no reaction to cont/alt/del. I have to turn
it off manually. Happens during startup, shutdown,
software installation, copying files, saving files,
opening/closing folders, word processing,
defragmentation, or just sitting idle for a time. When I
restart, I can duplicate the action with no problems.

I am running an AMD Duron processor, 951 MHz, 320 MB RAM.
There is an older second drive on my computer used for
storage of graphics files, but it hasn't been involved in
this. System restore either has no effect, or won't
restore to the points I select.

Should I just give up and reinstall? Thanks for any
advice.

It is most likely an intermittent hardware problem. It could be a
temperature problem, particularly if you are overclocking your CPU. Your
CPU fan could be failing or failed, causing CPU overheating. Your memory
could be bad.

Newly installed? You might have mismatched memory modules (esp. since
you say you have 320 MB). XP is much more sensitive to memory mismatches
than 9x. Try taking one of the modules out.
