I have been "cleaning house" in my 120G drive...Ive streamlined many things,
but there are still duplicate items I want gone...

In the start menu, there is a program folder named "startup", that contains
a bunch of links that I dont want, dont need, dont use, or have listed
elswere...but I'm told that I cant delete it because it is required for
windows to run properly...

Its just a redundant, unnessesary folder to me, taking up space...Any way to
delete it? If it truly is required, is there any way to hide it?

I hate to always see things on my desktop and start menu that I dont need.

Oh, I also have a "safley remove hardware" icon in my toolbar I cant seem to
get rid of...I dont need this one either.

THANKS FOR ANY ANSWERS.

Hi,

The startup folder is a system folder and is not removable. You don't have
to keep anything in it, but it will be there none the less. I don't know of
any way to remove the icon in the system tray, it is there by design so that
hot plugging software can be properly stopped before being detached from the
system.

The startup folder contains programs that run when you start Windows. {you
should also find them listed in msconfig, startup tab}.
Many applications install small programs that are listed in the startup
folder. At worse, deleting them will effect the operation of some
application until you start the application. Then, they could come back.
You can usually tell by the name what application installed the program.
One I have is for OneNote 2003 quick launch. If you are not sure that you
need them to run at startup, just create a folder like Test Startup and move
the files there. The Test Startup folder will never be use by Windows. If
you find you need one of the programs, move it back to the startup folder.
The startup folder itself is a system folder which can be empty.

You may have links to the programs elsewhere, but a shortcut in the Startup folder tells Windows to
start that program when you log in. If you don't want the program starting, remove its shortcut
from the Startup folder.

As the others have said, Startup is a system folder & cannot be deleted. However, its presence
under All Programs is just the default install -- it can be moved to a location that will prevent it
from being displayed under All Programs.

To move it to another location (I would suggest your userprofile directory) do the following:

right-click the Start button & select 'Open'

Double-click the 'Programs' folder.

Right-click the 'Startup' folder and select 'Cut'

Navigate to 'C:\Docs & Setting\<username>'

Right-click & select 'Paste'
