I am using Xp SP2 and get a message stating 'unmountable_boot_volume' on
start-up. I cannot enter safe mode, or boot from an alternative source. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Could mean a couple of things, but unless you just changed the hardware the
most likely thing is a corrupted boot.ini file. You will need to load the
Recovery Console and delete the existing boot.ini, then build a new one from
the command prompt.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]

Sean;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay
software which is not needed anyway.
