I am getting this message on start up - don't have any Windows XP install or
recovery disks. What do you suggest?

Check out some of the ideas here
http://www.google.ca/search?sourcei...T4GGLJ_enCA203CA204&q=Unmountable+boot+volume

If you need to access the recovery console and have no Windows XP media try
downloading this iso that will create a self booting CD you can use to
access the recovery console
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/Tools/bootdiscs/xp_rec_con.zip
(you will need to extract the iso image and burn it correctly to create the
bootable CD - see this if needed http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm )

Unfortunately I've often found this error to be hardware related
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555302 but as the google search above
reveals the problem could be related to boot.ini or other issues.

I suggest you get ahold of a XP CD and run the recovery
console.....specifically the Fix boot command.

I suggest you acquire a Windows XP installation CD or a recovery CD from the
computer manufacturer. You will need it eventually.

Harry -
I created the self booting CD and everything went smoothly until I typed "R"
on the Welcome to Setup screen to get to the recovery console. A screen came
up with the following text:

Windows XP Home Edition Setup

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your
computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This
may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.

I believe I have Windows XP Professional Edition...not sure if that matters.
Can you recommend anything else based on this new error message I'm getting?

Thanks,
Jim

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web
site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the
diagnostics on the drive.

Hi! I'm having the same ubv problem. When I put my Win XP Pro. disk in to go
to the Recovery Console, I get this warning: "Setup cannot continue because
the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.
" This is the Win XP the store that sold me the computer gave me (though I
upgraded to Service Pack 2) on their advice soon after getting it. Is there
a download or patch I need to be able to access the Recovery Console? Thanks!

Create an installation CD that has SP2 on it, in a process called
slipstreaming. Autostreamer makes it easier.

Slipstream

Autostreamer

FYI next time create a new thread for your question rather than asking it as
a reply to someone else's thread.
