Unlocking User Not Working

I am the only user on my computer and when prompted to enter my password, it
is accepted and I am then taken the my desktop. the only problem is that I
am only there for about 3 seconds and then the screen blinks and I am
immediately taken back to the password prompt stating that it is locked
again. How can I fix this?

Check your Power settings and also Screensaver settings.

Is there another way to get to these settings? I cannot even get to my
desktop to go that route.

Can you get into Safe Mode? Repeatedly tap F8 as the computer is
starting up. If you can get in successfully, then try a System Restore
to before the problem. Also, what changed between the time things worked
and the time they didn't?

If you can't even get into Safe Mode, then you can try running System
Restore as described in this tutorial:
