unlock files

how do i unlock my word document files, I did something
to lock them (I don't know what) and now I can't type
into them, the message at the bottom says "this
modification is not allowed, because the document is
locked"

The toolbars are dimmed and I can't activate the unlock
button
 
Have you activated Word?
