When I turn on my computer, some programme (that I can't
determine) dials the internet, but I can't find out what.
An autoplay window runs intermittantly too.

Microsoft AntiSpyware doesn't find any spyware programmes.
I also have Spybot, but this too doesn't register any problems.

Can you help?

Use Ewido Security Suite as this will perform better with
a dialer if thats what this is, If you have a modem
connection which is appears you have then do this soon
incase its a premium rate number that is being dialed

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install ewido.
During the installation, under "Additional Options"
uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via
context menu".
Launch ewido
It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it
will go to the main screen
On the left side of the main screen click update
Click on Start and let it update.
DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe
mode.

Download Ccleaner and install to remove temp and unused
files

http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp

Then reboot into safe mode (Reboot and keep tapping F8
then choose safe mode from the list)

When the pc starts first check the Add/Remove screen on
control panel for any suspicious programs such a
XDiver,GlobalDialer,Wild4_JP,CONNECT etc.. and remove
them if found (These are just examples they could be
called anything if it is a dialer program)

While still in safe mode run Ewido on a complete system
scan and remove any problems then finally use Ccleaner to
remove any temp or unused files from your system

Then reboot back to normal mode and see if it still tries
to dial out. Let us know if you have problems and what
Ewido detects.

Ive never had a Modem Connection so I cannot help much on
the dial up part but you could phone your Internet
Service Provider and they will guide you how to check and
reset the number if needed. I think you will find the
area in control panel under Phone & Modem Options but you
should speak to your ISP about this part or maybe other
helpers here can guide you through the process if needed

Andy's given excellent information that will help if this dialup is being
prompted by something "bad."

However, there's a pretty good chance that it may be related to something
"good"--i.e. intentionally installed by you and desirable, but behaving
badly in this particular fashion.

Is your system set to dial the Internet upon request? If so, changing this
to manual dial only may at least enable you to regulate the behavior.

A firewall which regulates outbound as well as inbound traffic can also give
you a clue about what's trying to talk outbound at a given moment. There
are a number of free software firewalls that would give you this
information, I believe.

You could also try MSCONFIG and see whether setting a diagnostic startup
eliminates the dialup. If it does, add back in services and startup items
to see what eventually causes the dialup. This can take some time, but
should be effective.
