Ask the sender to describe its nature and filetype - if there was an
attachment.

If it was unsolicited, from an unknown party, delete it.

if you don't know who or why it was sent, delete it ! best advice.

Hi,

Delete it unless you are sure of its origin. Contact the sender - did they
send it to you intentionally?

Did the file have a .exe, .scr, .com, .bat, .pif, or other similar extension
and did you attempt to open it? If so, it is highly likely that it was, in
fact, a virus disguised as something to trick you into opening it. If you
tried to run it, and nothing seemed to happen, then chances are something
actually did happen - you were infected, and just don't know it. Update your
antivirus software immediately and run a full system scan.

This may or may not be the case depending on your setup or folder options
etc....

But regarding file extensions... a file called "Attatcment.txt" could be a
masked executable too... ie "Attatchment.txt.exe"... an old problem most
people know about, but some newer users get caught out by it still.

Its a bit of a bugbear with long filenames unfortunately.

Well, since you say you don't know the origin of the email, the
_only_ sensible thing to do would be to delete it. And then perform a
very thorough scan of your hard drive using a good antivirus
application with current virus definition files. Hopefully, you
haven't done too much damage to your data.
