Every day about 8 a.m. an unknown program reads from my
hard drive, slowing the computer considerably for about 30
minutes. Does anyone know how I can tell what is doing it
so I can stop it? I've already removed all scheduled
tasks under Windows. Also, I look under task manager
while the read is taking place, and I can't tell from any
processes or running programs anything about why the read
is taking place. Any help greatly appreciated. I'm
easily contacted at (e-mail address removed).

Gracias.

Are you online with the internet when this occurs?
Is this machine on a company network?
Have you scanned for viruses etc?
Have you scanned for spyware?
Are any applications running while this takes place?

You might want to get a packet sniffer to see what if any ports are being
accessed. Also try changing the time on your computer to see if it is being
accessed by your computer or an outside computer. Check all folders for
sharing (and who can access).

Make a list of what processes are running normally, then see if an extra is
running at 8 am. For me, it is my virus software running a virus scan.
Nothing pops up to warn me, it just starts. I must have selected auto scan
when I installed it or something. While it is happening have a look at which
process is having a lot of "movement", then come back here and report. The
other thing that annoys me badly, is the windows debugger keeps starting
when I am using MSN Messenger. Still working on that problem :)

Hi Jerry,

One thing I do is open Task Manager on processes click the header named CPU and watch to see
which processes jump to the top, and tell what it is using cycles.

good computing,
