Lately, every time I log into my user name on windows xp,
the new hardware wizzard pops up with "new hardware
detected, unknown". It wants drivers, but I don't know
what it's trying to install. If I let it search for
drivers, it ends up with the, "could not install device,
drivers not found" window. In the device manager it shows
a yellow "?", for "other devices", and four
yellow "?","unknown device", under that. If I delete
these, it comes back next time I log on. It seems to me
that this started after I uninstalled SP2.
I haven't noticed an affect on the operation of other
programs.
Any Ideas?

I would guess its looking for your chipset driver for
your motherboard ... give more detail what kind of
computer it is ???

HP Pavillion,celeron 531 mhz, 512 ram, 80 g hd, win xp
home, I did the latest bios upgrade about 3 months ago,
well before this started.
What's a chipset? what does it do? I might be able to
link it to some recent upgrades.
Is there any way to pin point what hardware is being
looked for?
Thank you,

This can vary...... Are there any categories missing via the Device Manager,
that should normally be there? When you go to Add New Hardware via the
Control Panel is anything listed there specifically for needing to be
installed, etc? Generally, "some" info is given via the new hardware
detected. Lastly, after a SP2 install, this has to do with mass storage
devices. Good luck and keep us posted.
