And windows installation gives the main partition letter E not C even
though I disconected the floppy and only have the cd rom and hd only hooked
up..

In the bios under boot I see that *bootable add in cards* was number one
and my hd two.. what are these bootable add in cards?
thanks again

Looks as if you have a USB card reader ignore it, once you delete all
partitions you should be able to creat a new C: partition

That's the prob; I don't, and I can't highlight it to delete it. The only
usb ever connected was a camera usb device but that's long gone.. I switched
in the bios boot page though, and now my hd is C:/ but the unknown device
still there.

Maybe it's an onboard chip that never had an interface attached to it by
the PC's manufacturer, I have seen HP Pavilion PC's with several of these
USB devices, but they had card slots on the front panel of the
housing.
In any event I would just continue with the installation and see what
turns up in Device Manager afterwards, would be handy if you had the
mainboards manual to refer to.

Also even though I have the floppy disconnected before I started the new
installation it is still there in my computer with the unknown device which
is now a *removable disk* this is an emachine maybe somewhere in the bios
these things are hanging around and getting *installed* again

Sorry I have no experience with emachines, but did you elect to set
FDDs to disabled in BIOS setup ?,
Have another look in BIOS, expand all pages and see if you can find
a reference to the unknown device, in particular the Integrated
Peripherals Page, unless you are positive that youv'e already done this.

good luck

Thanks for the help roberto... also, in disk management it is saying that it
is a sony memorystick crx. but of course no such stick is hooked up

I found this on the Sony OZ site, is it relevant to your situation ?

http://www.sony.com.au/faq.jsp?id=1105&productId=CRX225A

Q: The Memory Stick function of my CRX-175M drive is not working.
A: For the Memory Stick function to work, the CRX-175M drive must be
set to the Master setting and connected by itself on it's IDE channel.

Typically, as most PCs have an IDE hard drive connected as Master to
the Primary IDE bus, the CRX-175M must be connected to the Secondary IDE bus
and set to Master. Make sure that there are no other IDE devices connected
on the same IDE bus as the drive. If another IDE device is connected as
Slave on the same IDE bus as the CRX-175M, the drive will still function
perfectly as a CD recorder but the Memory Stick function will be disabled.

For more information about IDE Configuration, please refer to our IDE
Configuration Guide.
