I am fixing up an old PCCHIPS M598LMR 380mhz, for a friends daughter. I removed 98 because it was too slow. Added memory, a 500mhz processor, and a 40gig HD. Then I loaded XP and the problems started. The onboard NIC and Modem do not have drivers for XP and I can't find ones that work. I have spent hours dl'ing and installing different drivers. So I disabled the onboard NIC and Modem and was about to install PCI cards when I got a message from the system on boot that it found new hardware. I let it look for the drivers and it reported that it did not install them or there was and error and the device might not work properly. I do not have anything else installed on the mother board and everything is working just fine. In Device manager I now have an Other Devices component and under that I have an Unknown device. I have removed it and rebooted and it keeps coming back. I even went the manual mode until it asks me what the device is. I don't know what it is!
Is there any software out there to check what is not working or what is causing this to happen?
Or better still do you have an answer to the very frustrating problem?

It sounds like there is a MOBO chipset driver that needs
to be installed. If you get that working, you can probably
get the onboard stuff running too. Look on drivers.org or
another large driver database website for the chipset
drivers for the MOBO.
