I'm having a frustrating problem. I've dedicated a lot of work to
spreadsheet in Excel 2000 (SR-1) and suddenly it is crashing constantl
for no reason. Typically it will crash when I do one of the followin
(virtually anything other than just look at the screen):
1) modify a formula
2) drag a cell
3) type a number into a cell that was already populated
4) change a chart reference
5) rename a worksheet tab

The crashing is unpredictable, but consistent (e.g. repeating the sam
operation will continue to crash the file upon re-opening it).

HOWEVER, THE FILE IS PERFECT IN EXCEL XP. No crashes.

Unfortunately, I share this file with people at work and we do not hav
the luxury of all upgrading to XP. Their PCs mimic my problem
exactly.

I have tried to "Detect problems and Repair" the file, but it say
nothing is wrong.

Here are some quick troubleshooting answers:
1) The file is only 300k, and has less than 10 charts.
2) There are no references to any external files.
3) There are no macros.
4) I use no customized range names

I want to fix the file without manually re-typing everything into a ne
"clean" workbook. Any tips? I am afraid I have a corrupt file tha
will take days to recreate.

Thanks for any ideas

Since it happens on other pc's, it kind of sounds like a problem with the
workbook--not excel itself.

Maybe....opening (a copy) in OpenOffice and saving it there would clean up any
problems.
(http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)

(lots of people have raved about openoffice saving their work (or most of it).)

(By chance, did you open in xl2002 and save there, too? Maybe that would help
clean it up, too.)

At some point, I managed to save a version of the file just as it wa
crashing... thus, I could not open it without it immediately crashing.

So, I opened it on a co-worker's machine in a newer version of X
(2002? XP?) and voila, it worked. Then I re-saved it and tried to ope
in in Excel 2000 on my machine. It worked! But... it continued to hav
other crashing problems. So, the problem was not solved.

I'll check out Open Office... I've never heard of it. Maybe it will d
the trick

Can't install new software on this PC. IT hasn't been able to help.

Might try the file at home.

I tried resaving from Excel for XP (on another pc) into old format
(97, 95) to no avail. The file still crashes in 2000.

I'm not sure how Open Office would do better.

How can one file be so unstable, yet not crash Office in XP

Just a guess--each version of excel seems to have gotten better dealing with
workbooks that are right on the cusp of corruption.

But I've seen posts that have suggested trying to open a workbook that crashed
in xl2002 in xl2k.

I think it's a mystery!

And more of a mystery that a different program (OpenOffice) can open workbooks
that no version of excel can.

Ain't life strange?
